Alan Caves suffered a shock early exit at the Circus Tavern |
Josephus Schenk claimed the first scalp of day two of the Ladbrokes World Championship by beating Alan Caves 3-0. Caves, the highest-ranked player in action on the day, failed to spark and the Dutchman took advantage.
He made a brilliant 161 checkout in the first leg of the third set to virtually seal his victory and now meets world number three Peter Manley on Wednesday.
Schenk only reached the PDC's showpiece event by finishing top of an order of merit in the Netherlands.
Gerry Convery earned a meeting with two-time world champion John Part when he beat Wes Newton 3-0.
Convery, born in Northern Ireland but representing Canada, said: "When I saw the draw I thought if I got through to play John it would be excellent."
Mark Holden, who only resumed his career in October after a break from the sport, saw off Simon Whatley 3-0.
Holden had an unusual problem before the match after losing his stage shirt.
"A security guard had found it on the floor of the car park and it was frozen solid, as stiff as a board. I had to thaw it out, it was amazing," he said.
Meanwhile, 1983 world champion Keith Deller tumbled out to qualifier Wayne Jones, losing 3-1 despite taking the first set.
Poor finishing was to blame for the 45-year-old from Suffolk, while his opponent enjoyed plenty of check-out success on double 18.
Three-time former semi-finalist Peter Evison had no problems in overcoming his friend Mark Landers 3-0.
