Sir Chris Hoy hopes to compete at this year's Commonwealth Games despite the possibility of a clash with the re-jigged European Championships.

It is unclear if riders over the age of 23 will be able to compete for the first time at the Europeans, or even when the event will be held.

Hoy, 34, said: "I'm planning to be in Delhi but I really do not know what's going to happen. It's frustrating."

The European Championship may also be a qualifier for the London 2012 Olympics.

In May the UCI announced changes to the Olympic Games qualification criteria, introducing continental championships alongside Track World Cup events and the Track Cycling World Championships.

The qualification period for London began after March's World Championships in Copenhagen and runs until the Melbourne event in 2012.

British Cycling was previously assured there would be no clash with the October Commonwealth Games, but even a move to November would cause headaches for the riders.

Four-time Olympic champion Hoy said: "The UCI do tend to drop bombshells left, right and centre. I will do whatever the programme [at the Commonwealth Games] dictates.

"It is not good preparation. The difficulty is that you have to prepare to peak and try and make sure you are in the right condition at the right time.

"If you want to be in 100% at the right time, that takes a little planning."

The Commonwealth Games will be no walkover, he predicted adding: "The standard of competition at the Commonwealth Games is very high. The only big nations missing are France and Germany.

"The Canadians and all the individual British countries are always strong."
