Team pursuit brings sole GB medal

GB's pursuit team
GB fielded a younger line-up after winning in Manchester

Great Britain took team pursuit silver on a disappointing second day in the track World Cup event in Melbourne.

The GB line-up, who lost to Australia, were seven seconds slower than the quartet who set a track record to win in Manchester three weeks ago.

Olympic silver medallist Ross Edgar missed the keirin final, while Chris Newton was sixth in the scratch race.

And David Daniell, who took silver in the 1km time trial in Manchester, was fourth behind Aussie Scott Sunderland.

Andrew Fenn, 19, replaced Geraint Thomas - who may miss the World Championships in March because of road racing commitments - in the team pursuit line-up.

The team, including Andy Tennant, Steven Burke, and Ed Clancy were fastest in qualifying but conceded an early lead to a strong Aussie line-up in the final, which the hosts built on.

Edgar and Matt Crampton both finished fourth in their keirin heats, although Edgar won the minor final to finish ranked seventh overall.

Veteran Newton's disappointing event continued as he could not match the pace in the final sprint in the scratch race, a day after missing out in the points race.
