Cavendish misses Paris-Tours race

Mark Cavendish
Cavendish claimed his 50th career win at the Tour of Missouri this month

Sprint star Mark Cavendish has pulled out of the Paris-Tours classic, his Columbia team have announced.

The 24-year-old, who has 23 victories this season, withdrew from the Tour of Missouri and World Championships last month with a respiratory infection.

Cavendish had six stage wins in this year's Tour de France and also won the prestigious Milan-San Remo.

The Paris-Tours, which will run on 11 October, was won by Belgium's Philippe Gilbert last year.
