Tour de France, day two: Again there is a heavy media focus on the return of Lance Armstrong, who finished the first stage in 10th place with team-mate Albert Contador second behind Fabian Cancellara
Cancellara of Switzerland enjoys his morning in Monaco in the yellow jersey as 2008 UCI Road Race World Champion Alessandro Ballan takes time out to congratulate him on his time trial win
Cancellara (right) wears the yellow jersey at the start tape alongside Britain's Bradley Wiggins (left) in the green points jersey and Roman Kreuziger (centre) in the white jersey for the best young rider
The 187km (117-mile) stage begins with a climb through the hills of Monaco toward Brignoles, taking in Nice then moving inland just before Antibes for three category four climbs
The relatively flat stage is unlikely to be of much interest to Astana rider and pre-race favourite Contador - expect to see much more of him in the mountains
The peloton passes through the Promenade des Anglais Nice as Stef Clement, Cyril Dessel, Stephane Auge and Jussi Veikkanen form an early breakaway group
The route also takes in the winding roads through the woods of le Tignet and Fayence, offering the riders welcome shade, before the riders pass through a food station at Garron
The Danish Team Saxo Bank rides through Nice with team leader Cancellara in the distinctive yellow but Team Columbia are busy at the front reeling in the breakaway
And it is Team Columbia, who set a blistering pace over the final kilometres, that dominates the finish of the stage after a crash at the final corner
Mark Cavendish wins the stage in four hours, 30 minutes and will wear the green jersey for the next stage, Cancellara keeps the yellow, while Yukiya Arashiro's fifth place is the best ever by a Japanese rider on the Tour
Astana team-mates Armstrong (left) and Contador enjoy a quiet day in the sanctuary of the peloton and finish 80th and 58th respectively
Cavendish, who won four stages of the 2008 Tour, records his 42nd professional victory, surpassing Chris Boardman's previous British record
