Hammond is a former British road and cyclo-cross champion |
Britain's Roger Hammond made a late break from the leading group to win stage two he Tour of Qatar, and take the overall lead from Bradley Wiggins. Hammond, 35, riding for the new Cervelo Test Team, made his escape with just 2.8km to go on the 134km stage from Khalifa Stadium to Al Khor Corniche. Strong winds on the flat desert roads broke up the peloton, but Hammond's team stuck together to set up the win. "We started attacking and I was the lucky one," said Hammond. "We knew it was going to be windy. We knew it wasn't going to a be a sprint finish," he added. "We had to attack and that's what we did." Wiggins' Garmin team won the opening stage, the team time trial on Sunday. The tour continues on Tuesday with the 137.5km third stage to the Doha Golf Club.
