GB cyclists to contest track role
Jamie Staff
34-year-old Staff is a former BMX World Champion
British Cycling are to use Saturday's Revolution event as a key factor in deciding who leads out the men's team sprint at the World Championships.

Jamie Staff looks to be favourite after an impressive lead-out ride in the recent Copenhagen Track World Cup.

But he knows he will come under strong pressure from Jason Kenny and Craig MacLean at the Manchester event.

"It's crunch time for Worlds selection and I'm extremely confident that I'll be chosen to lead out," said Staff.

"My hard work's been paying off; I beat Jason [Kenny] by three tenths of a second and Craig [MacLean] wasn't on great form either so for the team, Copenhagen was disappointing," added Staff.

"But let us hope they'll freshen up so we can get some medals in the Worlds."

The three riders will take part in a special standing-start 500m time-trial at the beginning of the Revolution, designed to simulate a competition environment.

"This is serious head-to-head stuff and the coal-face for selection for the Worlds" confirmed British Cycling head coach Shane Sutton.

"The rider who rides the Worlds will definitely have a head start on Olympic selection so the riders know how important it is."

MacLean led the team to silver at the 2007 World Championships but Staff has long been in contention for the role, and now, emerging star Kenny is proving a serious threat to the lead-out position.

In the time-trial, Jason Kenny will be riding with Matt Crampton, Jamie Staff with Ross Edgar and Craig MacLean with Jason Queally.
