Cooke has opened up an 80-point lead over her nearest rival |
Nicole Cooke moved closer to winning a third World Cup title after finishing second in the Grand Prix de Plouay, France, on Sunday. Noemi Cantele won the race, almost half a minute ahead of Cooke, who claimed 50 points with her second place.
That means Cooke goes into the final race of the series in Nurnberg, Germany, leading by 80 points in the overall standings from Marianne Vos.
"It's not over yet but I was very happy with my result," Cooke said.
"It's really good to get second place in this World Cup Race as it puts me in a great position going into the final round on 16 September.
"Marianne Vos finished seventh, so I have extended my lead to 80 points.
"I'm building up my form ready for the World Championships at the end of September."
Cooke's overall lead of 80 points would normally have been enough for her to retain the title.
However, with double points on offer in Nrnberg, the 2007 competition may well come down to the final sprint.
