International cycling boss Pat McQuaid believes that world anti-doping chief Dick Pound wants to "kill our sport". Pound, the head of the World Anti-Doping Agency, said cycling was "in the toilet" after a series of high-profile doping cases during 2006.
"As far as we're concerned he lacks credibility and he's got a knife in our sport," said McQuaid.
"He continues to make statements about cycling. I understand he's leaving next year and the sooner the better."
McQuaid, president of the International Cycling Union, has promised to take a hard line against doping.
He has set up a team of academics and scientists to study the demands of professional cycling and recommend any changes that should be made to the sport.
"As chief of Wada, his role is to assist sport in the fight against doping but he doesn't help cycling," added McQuaid.
"We've given him presentations and he knows that we do more than other sports, yet he continues to try to kill our sport. I can't accept that.
"As soon as he's out of that job, the better."
