Cancellara takes time trial title

Switzerland's Fabian Cancellara ended the three-year reign of Michael Rogers as he won the time trial at the World Cycling Championships in Austria.

Defending champion Rogers could only finish eighth, while US champion David Zabriskie was second, one minute 30 seconds behind Cancellara.

Cancellara flew round the 50.8km course in one hour 11.75 seconds.

Kazakhstan's Alexandre Vinokourov came third but Britain's David Millar was 15th after suffering a puncture.

"I gave it everything I could but Cancellara and the other boys were really strong today," said Rogers.

These championships mark Millar's first appearance for the Great Britain team since returning from a two-year doping ban.

But the Scot's promising recent form counted for nothing as he finished more than three minutes behind Cancellara.

"I felt pretty good at the start but there was a headwind for a lot of the way, then I punctured," said Millar.

"I punctured on the first climb. I didn't lose too much time changing my wheel but it kind of symbolised my day really.

"It could have gone either way but it was really hard. I just wasn't strong enough."
