Wegmann made his decisive move late in the race |
Fabian Wegmann finished strongest to win the first stage of the Dauphine Libere Tour de France warm-up race from Annecy to Bourgoin-Jallieu. The German clocked a time of five hours, five minutes and 36 seconds for the 207km stage after breaking away with 15km to go.
The Gerolsteiner rider edged out Frenchman Thomas Voeckler and Spain's Egoi Martinez on the line.
British rider Bradley Wiggins finished in the main pack 13 seconds back.
Thanks to time bonuses, Wegmann now leads overall, with Martinez second five seconds back on the same time as the former leader and prologue winner, American Dave Zabriskie.
"I am quite surprised we managed to keep the sprinters at bay," said Wegmann, a former winner of the King of the Mountains in the Giro d'Italia.
"It was a tough stage to do. I haven't raced for five weeks, so this is a good sign for
the Tour de France."
