 Piepoli attacked with 6.5km left to race on stage 13 |
Leonardo Piepoli won the 13th stage of the Giro d'Italia from Alessandria to the ski resort of La Thuile. The Italian sealed victory by attacking on the descent of the Colle San Carlo climb, 6.5km from the finish.
Piepoli, who rides for the Saunier Duval team, crossed the line 44 seconds ahead of compatriot Ivan Basso and 79 in front of Spain's Jose Gutierrez.
Basso extended his race lead to more than three minutes. Sunday's 223km 14th stage is from Aosta to Domodossola.
