Staff, Queally and Hoy enjoy their success

The trio of Chris Hoy, Jason Queally and Jamie Staff won the sprint event, beating the highly-fancied Dutch team in the final.

But 2002 points-race winner Chris Newton faced disappointment in this year's event, finishing fourth.

Victoria Pendleton also missed out on the medals in the 500m time trial.

Britain's team sprint challenge began well with lead-off man Jamie Staff, standing in for flu victim Craig MacLean, going faster than he had managed in qualifying.

Going into the final lap, however, the Dutch had a slight advantage but a storming circuit by Hoy ensured victory for the Britons.

Hoy said: "We rode well together. I was really pleased with the two change-overs, and the pressure we were under, it would have been a disaster if we had been second.

"There is only one result we wanted there.

"I was disappointed for Craig because he would have loved to be have been up there.

"He's been a great team player all these years and he should be back again soon."

Queally led the second lap and Hoy was particularly pleased for the 34-year-old Lancastrian, who had never won a world title until now.

Hoy added: "He looks good standing there with a rainbow jersey. I think he'll enjoy being called world champion and not former Olympic champion.
