 Pat McQuaid is the new ICU president |
Irishman Pat McQuaid has been elected president of the International Cycling Union, the sport's governing body. The 55-year-old, favoured candidate of outgoing president Hein Verbruggen, was a winner by 31 votes to 11 over the only other candidate, Gregorio Moreno.
Darsan Singh Gill of Malaysia withdrew his candidacy before the vote in a controversial campaign.
Verbruggen had been president for 14 years and leaves McQuaid the task of resolving the future of the Pro Tour.
The Pro Tour is an attempt, driven by Verbruggen, to bring order to the cycling calendar but has faced opposition from the three Grand Tours, in particular ASO, organisers of the Tour de France.
