Australian rider Brad McGee pulled out of the Tour de France during the fifth stage because of a back injury. McGee had been affected since the start of the race and quit during Thursday's stage from Amiens to Chartres.
The 28-year-old from Sydney, who will go for gold at the Athens Olympics, won last year's prologue and wore the leader's yellow jersey for three days.
He said that he picked up the injury while potting plants at his new home a week before the Tour.
McGee insisted on Monday he would be able to carry on.
