| Domo-Farm Frites Richard Virenque is back after serving his doping suspension, and is aiming for a record sixth King of the Mountains title.
The Frenchman has enjoyed an impressive record in the race, and remains ever poular in his homeland, despite admitting to drug use. His Belgian team boast six riders in the current world top 100 but the team could manage only a best individual place of 22nd in the 2001 event. Axel Merckx, the son of legend Eddy and the highest-placed rider in the team last year, may no longer be the team's major protagonist this time around.
Merckx and Virenque are not the only stars of the Belgian team. Former world champions Johan Museeuw and Ramon Vainsteins may also be in the team's line-up, while Leon van Bon is a potential stage winner. The team itself was originally formed by Patrick Lefevre who leaves the running of the team to both Wilfred Peeters and Mark Sergeant. Frank Vandenbroucke, was banned for six months this season for the possession of banned drugs. Even though that has been reversed, he is almost certain to miss the Tour. |
