Mondini faces suspension
Gianpaolo Mondini
Mondini won Stage 18 of the 1999 Tour de France
A new member of Lance Armstrong's US Postal team is among 13 riders being targeted with doping bans by the Italian cycling federation.

Gianpaolo Mondini, a 29-year-old former Tour de France stage winner, joined Armstrong's American team in the off-season.

He is threatened with a ban of up to four-and-a-half-years ban following a request by the anti-doping commission of the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI).

On Friday, CONI handed the files of the 13 accused riders, who fell victim to a police raid on team hotel rooms at San Remo during last year's Giro d'Italia, to the Italian cycling federation.

Acquittal

CONI have also requested the federation sanction Italian veteran Alberto Elli (Index-Alexia), Ermanno Brignoli (Mercatone Uno) and Daniele De Paoli (Alessio), with four-year bans.

Bans of two-and-a-half years have been requested for Marcello Siboni (Mercatone Uno) and two years for Giuliano Figueras (Panaria).

CONI also want suspensions of 18 months for Giuseppe Di Grande (Index-Alexia) and Endrio Leoni (Alessio).

Six-month bans are requested for Dario Andriotto (Index-Alexia), Rinaldo Nocentini (Fassa Bortolo), Mariano Piccoli (Lampre), Domenico Romano (Landbouwkrediet) and Antonio Varriale (Panaria).

CONI has requested the acquittal of Marco Magnani and Marco Villa (Index-Alexia), Marco Velo (Fassa Bortolo) and Ukrainian Vladimir Duma (Panaria).
