York Indoor Bowls Club is the biggest in England with 1800 members |
York Indoor Bowls Club's under-60s team have reached the quarter-finals of the Lingford Trophy for the first time. They beat Huntingdon on aggregate at the neutral venue of Doncaster on Sunday, thanks to a dramatic comeback from team captain Helen Walker. She told BBC Radio York: "About a third of the way through the game I was 10 shots down at 11-1, and we turned it round and won 21-12." York now play Rugby Thornfield at South Forest near Mansfield on 25 January. Walker said: "We've probably got one of the youngest teams in the Lingford Trophy. We've got 13, 16 and 17-year-olds playing so it's a great achievement. "The team we beat [on Sunday] beat a team that had four current England internationals [in the previous round], but I didn't tell the young ones [in her team] because they were nervous enough." Walker, one of two England selectors and a former England international, said: "I have an idea of some of the clubs and I've played at this level before."
