Coach Scantlebury leaves Sharks

Basketball

Sheffield Sharks have parted ways with head coach Pete Scantlebury by mutual consent after five years in charge.

His departure comes after a disappointing season which saw the Sharks fail to make the BBL play-offs finals for only the second time.

Scantlebury had been at Sharks for nine years, and was their third coach in 14 British Basketball League seasons.

He told BBC Radio Sheffield: "It wasn't a case of me walking away, we both decided it was time for me to move on."

He replaced Chris Finch after three-and-a-half seasons as a player with the Sheffield side and lifted the BBL Cup and the play-off title in 2004, and finished as league runners-up last year.

He also coached England to the bronze medal at the Commonwealth games in Melbourne in 2006.

Sheffield have failed to win a major trophy since 2004, the longest they have gone without landing some silverware since the club joined the BBL in 1994.

The 2007/08 campaign was a frustrating one for Scantlebury with his best players leaving to earn more money elsewhere.

As a result, the Sharks finished out of the top four in the league for the first time in their 14-year franchise history.

The 44-year-old, who was named an MBE in 2002, said: "Coming back and going through the same frustration again, there was no point in doing that again."
