Davis will combine coaching with playing duties at the Rocks |
Scottish Rocks have named star forward Sterling Davis as their new head coach on a new two-year contract. The Texas-born 29-year-old will combine coaching with playing duties for the Glasgow-based team.
Davis said: "This is a great opportunity for me to start moving into the next phase of my career.
"I feel like I still have some good playing years left in me, but this is a great chance to get started as a coach."
The Rocks finished as runners-up in the BBL play-offs and BBL Cup last season.
But they have since lost German coach Thorsten Leibenath who resigned last month to take charge of his former club, Giessen 46ers.
 | This is obviously uncharted territory for the Rocks as we've never had a player/coach before Rocks general manager Bruce Cook |
Rocks general manager Bruce Cook revealed it was Leibenath who floated the idea of appointing a player/coach, with co-owner Ian Reid backing the plan.
"This is obviously uncharted territory for the Rocks as we've never had a player/coach before," said Cook.
"Thorsten was the first to mention the idea and Ian and I agreed that this was our best chance to bring back the most players from the current squad."
"While other teams in Europe may offer some of the guys more money, we hope they'll return to the Rocks for the chance to be a part of a special group that has some unfinished business to take care of."
Davis is the fourth-highest scorer in the BBL this century, with 3,464 points - averaging 18.5 per game - and has also taken 1,249 rebounds.
