Guildford Heat ease to BBL title
Basketball
The Guildford Heat won the BBL Championship - their second trophy of the season - with a 114-85 demolition of London United in their final game.

Skipper Michael Martin hit 22 points and took 13 rebounds to lead the Heat to their biggest total of the season.

After trailing 29-35 in the second quarter, Guildford's 24-4 run saw them in charge at the half-time interval.

Dan Gilbert and Dan Wardrope added 21 points each for the Heat, while Marlon Capers top-scored for London with 30.

Guildford, who won the BBL Cup in January in only their second season in the league, will host London again in a week's time in the play-off quarter-finals.

"We're going to enjoy today and tomorrow and then we'll be back in training on Tuesday," said Heat coach Paul James.

"These guys won't get complacent about the play-offs."

James won the championship in 1994 as a player with Thames Valley but said winning the title as a coach is a better feeling.

"Much better - it's something you tried to mastermind by looking at the whole season," he said."

"I said to the guys that whatever happened, we've had a great season. I felt we thoroughly deserved it. I'm really, really proud of them."

James named the New Year's Day win over Sheffield as the crucial moment of the season.

"We were 15 points down with seven minutes left and Dan Wardrope sank the three - the last shot of the game - that won it," he said.

The championship race had been one of the closest in recent years, with Guildford and Sheffield neck-and-neck into the final week of the season.

Sheffield's defeat at Newcastle in their penultimate game proved to be the crucial slip-up that cost them the title.

The Sharks won their final game, 66-64 away to Milton Keynes, who finished sixth.

The Plymouth Raiders posted their highest finish in their three seasons in the top flight - fifth - by beating Newcastle 89-83 in their final game.
