England have announced a 17-strong squad to compete in the men's basketball competition at the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games. It includes Steve Bucknall, the first Englishman to play in the NBA, and John Amaechi, who played 284 NBA games.
The squad will be reduced to 12 players before the start, where basketball makes its Commonwealth Games debut.
England's men play in the same pool as New Zealand, South Africa and Barbados in the preliminary round in Melbourne.
Head coach Peter Scantlebury said he is confident England's careful preparations for the Games will pay off.
"Thanks to the support we've had from Sport England and England Basketball, we've had a good programme throughout the summer," enthused Scantlebury.
"We've built up a really good team spirit and rapport, which we're looking to keep going up to Melbourne," he added.
"Australia will start as favourites. New Zealand will be the big game in our pool - if we can beat them we're likely to avoid Australia in the semis.
"We've got a good blend of youth and experience in the squad and we will go to Melbourne hoping to bring back a medal."
The England women's squad is expected to be announced early in the new year.
