Bonds maintains he has never knowingly used steroids |
Barry Bonds will play on in 2007 as he chases Hank Aaron's all-time home run record, according to his agent. Bonds, 42, is 21 behind Aaron's mark and is reaching the end of his current contract with the San Francisco Giants.
Implicated in baseball's steroids scandal and slowed by injuries, he has had a poor campaign this year.
But agent Jeff Borris said: "Barry is going to play in 2007, and I have every reason to believe the Giants will contact me as soon as the season ends."
He added in an interview with the Los Angeles Times: "My intentions are to see to it he's in a big-league uniform next season. Those are my marching orders."
Earlier this month, Bonds told his website: "I feel that I can play and be productive next year."
Some observers expect the Giants to part company with their controversial marquee player when his $90m five-year contract expires.
There is speculation that Bonds may seek a job as the designated hitter with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim as his children attend school in the area.
But, with the All-Star Game coming to San Francisco next season, the Giants may want to hang on to their star slugger for a 15th campaign.
