As the second half begins, the Saints recover an onside kick and score after a remarkable drive results in a touchdown for Pierre Thomas to put the Saints in the lead for the first time in the game, 13-10
But the Colts fire back immediately and regain the lead, with Peyton Manning leading a 76-yard drive in just over five minutes which finishes with a short Joseph Addai run for a touchdown, to make it 17-13

After Matt Stover misses a field-goal attempt for the Colts, the imperious Drew Brees leads a 59-yard drive that ends with Jeremy Shockey catching a two-yard pass for a touchdown. The Saints lead by five with under five minutes left to play
Just as it seems as though the Colts are going to level the game, Peyton Manning throws an interception and watches on in horror as it is returned for a 74-yard touchdown by Tracey Porter to give the Saints a 31-17 lead with only several minutes remaining
The interception proves to be crucial as the Colts fail to score the required two touchdowns, and Saints coach Sean Payton gets the traditional Gatorade bath in celebration
Manning, who grew up in New Orleans as his father played quarterback for the Saints, leaves the field disconsolate after tasting Super Bowl defeat for the first time
