Schwartz has been with the Tennessee for the last 10 seasons

The Detroit Lions have named Tennessee Titans defensive co-ordinator Jim Schwartz as their head coach.

Last month the Lions sacked coach Rod Marinelli after the team lost all 16 games - the first side to finish the NFL season with such a record.

"We're thrilled Jim Schwartz will become our team's new head coach," Lions president Tom Lewand told the team's website.

The 42-year-old Schwartz has been with Tennessee for the last 10 seasons.

Before the Lions' woeful campaign, the NFL record for losses in a season had been held by the 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who went 0-14 in their inaugural season.

Tennessee went out of the play-offs on Saturday after losing to Baltimore.

Prior to joining the Tennessee Schwartz spent three years with the Baltimore Ravens and he has also worked as a college and professional scout for the Cleveland Browns.
