Division One Silksworth CC remain the early leaders in Division One after a 9-1 victory against Silksworth IM 'A'. Graeme Barella and Kevin Wilson were unbeaten in singles and doubles for Silksworth CC, and Rod Roberts also defeated Howard Brown and George Carlyon 3-0. George Watson scored an excellent victory in the closest of matches against Roberts, however, coming through 11-9 in the fifth end. Thompson Insurance A's side of Darren McVitie, Alan Thompson and Chris Blake continued their fine start to the season by beating their 'B' team 10-0. St Chads produced their first win, seeing off West CA 'A' 7-3. Keith Weatherby had little trouble in taking his three singles, with Jimmy Scope also winning twice. After the doubles went to St Chads, David Bissett secured maximum points with a single victory. For West CA 'A', Geoff Salter won twice and John Williamson once. Division Two Durham CA began their campaign in Division Two with a 5-5 draw against West CA 'B'. Brian Bateman was fairly untroubled for Durham in winning his three singles. Gavin Bestford added a further singles win and Bateman and Bestford won a second point for Durham by winning the doubles 3-1. David Snowdon and Alan Whitwham won twice for West CA 'B' but both found Bateman too strong. Michael Redfearn added a crucial victory against John Foster to secure the draw. Mortimer CA won their first match in the Sunderland League as they saw off St Gabriels 'C' 7-3. Dave Cutler and Ian Moore were in fine form for the South Shields team as both remained unbeaten on the night in singles and doubles. Syd Gooding, Alan Ray and Ron Douglas each won once for St Gabriels 'C' but it was not enough for a share of the points. St Gabriels 'B' overwhelmed newly-promoted St John 'A' to win the match between the two sides 9-1. Craig Burton scored a 3-0 victory against Steven Young for St John, but apart from this it was all one-way traffic as Young, David Revell and Mark Burton took all of the remaining games. Division Three Sacriston St Bedes 'C' produced a surprise in Division Three as they defeated their 'B' team 6-4. Peter Whitfield led from the number one spot for the home side as he won all of his three singles, and he was well assisted by Terry Charlton who won twice. Sacriston 'B' gained their point through two victories for Dan Nicholson and one each for Colin Prichard and Ian McPherson. A brand new team, St John 'C', saw off the old heads of St John 'B' 9-1. The three 'C' team players were all making their debuts but you could not tell as Gary Anderson and Alex Smith took their three singles games and also the doubles. Tony Watson contributed two victories before just being edged out 12-10 in the fifth and deciding end by the ever-wily Hugh Bevan.
