The Newquay-based British Surfing Association has elected Chris Thomson as its new chairman. Thomson, who was elected with 119 votes, succeeds acting chairman Kevin Cook in the role. The election was called following heavy criticism of the way the sport is run at an emergency meeting held on 1 May. Members of the BSA expressed concern that there had been a breakdown in communication between themselves and those in charge. Three executive members have also been voted onto the new executive. Chris Philips, who polled 99 votes, will oversee finance, Simon Tucker [75 votes] will look after performance and Geoff Swallow [67 votes] has become the new strategy boss. The results were verified by Steve Hillman, the sports development officer of the Cornwall Sports Partnership. The new executive will meet for the first time on Saturday, 17 July at the BSA offices in Newquay.
