![]() | Friday, 4 August, 2000, 04:28 GMT 05:28 UK Orlando sweep up free agents ![]() Grant Hill (c) on his way to Orlando One month after telling the Detroit Pistons he would be signing for the Orlando Magic, All-Star, Grant Hill, has officially done just that. In a sign-and-trade deal that took, forward Ben Wallace, and guard Chucky Aktins to the Pistons, Hill signed a contract worth $86.5m over seven years. Talking at his press conference, Hill said: "I was a big fan of their's (Orlando). I kind of felt if I was going to leave Detroit, this was where I wanted to come." Fellow free agent, Tracy McGrady, opted to leave Toronto Raptors in a sign-and-trade deal worth $67.5m over six years, whilst giving a conditional draft pick as part of the agreement.
After last season's policy of having a team without superstars the Magic were able to offer bigger contracts to the free agents available and keep the competition at bay. In his first season as coach, Doc Rivers had a impressive record of 41-41, and his policy has been supported by Orlando's general manager, John Gabriel.
"Our wish was to bring the best basketball players in free agency to this team and we got the two best basketball players in free agency." In an effort to build on last season's results and to add class and presence to their line-up, the signings of Hill and McGrady can give the fans a season to look forward to. Five time All-Star It's obvious why these deals make sense, 27-year-old Hill averaged 25.7 points, third in the league, 6.6 rebounds and 5.2 assists last season for the Pistons. Hill, former Rookie of the Year, and five-time All-Star, also averaged 21.6 points in his six years with Detroit. This formidable player will be backed up by the figures of 21-year-old, McGrady. McGrady averaged 15.4 points and 6.3 rebounds last season and after turning down Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat, he is expected to build on that with Orlando. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Other top Other Sports stories: Links to top Other Sports stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||
