Richard Dixon (right) on route to his 11 stone win | My favourite time-warp, "A field int' back o' beyond" - otherwise known as Killington Sports - hosted its usual mix of serious wrestling and running, and less serious egg-throwing, tattie races and pillow fights at the end of May. The wrestling programme included the 11 stone World Championship, which was guaranteed a new title holder, with last year's winner, Andrew Carlile, abroad. This gave a chance to a younger contingent of wrestlers, and it was Richard Dixon of Lessonhall, Wigton who came out on top. Dixon used to be unbeatable as a tiny 11-year-old and now, twice as heavy and twice as tall, he is a formidable opponent in the lightweight events and well able to compete with heavier men. His chief opposition came from fellow Carlisle Wrestling Club members. In the semi-final Watchai Noimai proved an active and dangerous opponent, but Dixon finished him off with a sudden twist back from a difficult position. | Richard Fox went ahead in both finals by taking the first fall, but Graham made up ground with some big twists to win the next two falls | In the final Craig Ridley of Alston nearly caused an upset when the first hold was a dog-fall. After that wake-up call, Dixon got into gear and finished off Ridley with buttocks. Dixon has held various boys championships but this was his first senior title. The championship was the high point for the Carlisle wrestlers as all the other categories went to Kendal and Milnthorpe wrestlers. The formidable Brocklebank brothers, Graham and Thomas, won at 13 stones and All Weights respectively, meeting the same wrestler in their finals. Richard Fox went ahead in both finals by taking the first fall, but Graham made up ground with some big twists to win the next two falls, while Thomas stopped the rot in the All Weights by twice hoisting Fox up and back over. Another Brocklebank, cousin Scott, had to be careful in the final of the under-15s with Stuart Mason who took the middle fall with a neat cross-click. When he tried the same chip again in the third hold it was less neat and Brocklebank threw him forward and to the ground. As I left the field in near darkness, they were still thrashing away on the bolster and bar, and suicidal runners in droves were hurtling round the hills and hollows of that field "int back o' beyond".
