York based rowing clubs won 23 of the York Spring Regatta races |
York City Rowing Club's Spring Regatta attracted nearly 200 entries to the River Ouse above Lendal Bridge. The host club won 13 of the 49 events, with local school St. Peter's chalking up eight successes. York City's club captain Gill Porteous was delighted with the high number of entries from 24 clubs across Britain. "We've had crews from Strathclyde in Scotland down to Teesside, Cambios and Newark. It shows that the people are keen to come to York," she said. The regatta was graced by superb spring weather although that presented problems. Porteous added: "Of course we've had lots of cruisers out, so it's disturbed racing a little bit but everybody has their pleasures on the river so we all help each other out. "We've had everything from junior 14s, that's children who are 13-14 years old, probably new to the sport, right up to the veteran entries who have been rowing some time, shall we say." York is a major rowing centre with five clubs based on the river including one from Leeds University, and Porteous was pleased with the York City club's 13-medal haul. "Our own club membership is from around 14 years to around 70 plus," she added.
