Carlile is a Cumbrian exponent of the Gouren style |
Last week a group of young Cumbrian wrestlers were competing in the Cumberland and Westmorland style in Brittany. This week 'rocheds', Breton canvas wrestling tunics, were donned on the mats at Carlisle Wrestling Club for a training session.
The aim was to prepare Craig Naylor for the European Espoirs Championship in Tenerife at the end of this month.
The biennial event was last held at Lime House, Dalston, in October 2006, when we fielded a full and competitive team.
This year is a much thinner affair despite the worthy efforts of Andrew Carlile, a multi champion in our local style and a strong contender in the Gouren style when he competes abroad.
Andrew has travelled to other academies with a stock of rocheds to give a taste of Gouren to the new crop of wrestlers.
His efforts stirred up interest, but many of the keenest were too young to compete in the 16 to 20 event.
The only definite competitors are Craig Naylor of Wasdale, now a regular at Carlisle Wrestling Club since he began his studies at Newton Rigg, and Joe Harrington who was in the team in 2006 and is now at Newcastle University.
The truncated team will at least keep our place warm for the future, and give two excellent young wrestlers the chance to win individual titles in Tenerife.
Andrew Carlile is not too downhearted for he was delighted with the wrestling talent on view on his travels, and he foresees an excellent and full team competing in 2010, and an even better one two years later.
