Tweddle is the reigning Commonwealth A-bars champion |
British gymnast Beth Tweddle claimed her fifth consecutive national title at the weekend, equalling the record set by Margaret Bell between 1966 and 1970. Tweddle won gold in the asymmetric bars, vault, beam and floor to take the overall crown in Guildford and put her recent injury troubles behind her.
The 20-year-old was forced to retire from June's European Championships when she was concussed by a fall in warm up.
Tweedle now needs three more UK titles to match Pat Hirst's top haul of eight.
Hirst achieved her record between 1947 and 1956.
Tweddle's coach Amanda Kirby said: "Beth started with a big wobble on beam, but then recovered quickly and handled the situation brilliantly.
"Her performances on the other three apparatus were excellent."
City of Liverpool athlete Tweddle will now take a week off before beginning her preparations for next month's World Student Games in Turkey.
