Maier is back to winning ways |
Austria's Hermann Maier celebrated his first World Cup win of the season with victory in the super-G in Kitzbuhel. The 32-year-old former double Olympic and world champion completed the Streifalm course in a time of one minute 22.39 seconds.
American Daron Rahlves made a remarkable comeback, just 13 days after a spectacular crash in Adelboden, to come second only 0.02 seconds behind.
Austrian Fritz Strobl grabbed third place in one minute 22.93 seconds.
"I've been really close to victory all winter, so I knew I could do it," Maier said.
"But sometimes you need the win to be completely convinced, and to win here is of course very special.
"I knew Daron was one of the favourites. Coming back after two weeks off after he hurt himself, I knew he would be very motivated.
"He's very fast and certainly knows this course well, as I do. Last year I was .03 [seconds] behind. This year I am .02 in front."
Maier's triumph lifted him 17 points above American Bode Miller at the top of the World Cup super-G standings.
