The northern Italian city won the race to host the 2006 Games |
Skiers at the 2006 Winter Olympics face journeys of up to five hours to reach the slopes, says the president of the International Ski Federation (FIS). Gianfranco Kasper, who is also a member of the International Olympic Committee, added that host city Turin may struggle to deal with demand for accommodation.
"Our information says organisers lack 4,000 rooms in the mountains," he said.
"Transport times of up to five hours can be expected. I'm hoping for a miracle," he added.
Organisers are hoping to persuade local residents to make their homes available to visitors during the Games, which take place from 10 to 26 February, 2006.
"We're quite close to taking care of the great challenge," said Cristiano Carlutti, media director for the Turin organisers.
