Illness ends Smith hopes
Ben Smith has given up his fight to be fit for the University Boat Race.

The 20 year-old Cambridge architecture student helped make history in 2003 when two pairs of brothers competed in opposing crews for the first time.

Smith, whose elder sibling Matt stroked the winning Oxford crew last year, has been suffering from a recurring chest virus.

"It's a real shame, but Ben's health is more important than the race," said Cambridge coach Robin Williams.
