Richards sailed to fame in the Around Alone race |
British yachtswoman Emma Richards has launched a competition to find the next round-the-world sailing superstar. Richards unveiled "Yacht Idol" at the London Boat Show on Thursday, and the competition's winner will get the chance to race in her crew.
Anyone between the age of 16 and 23 is free to enter by writing 250 words on why they think they have what it takes to join Pindar's sailing team.
"This is a fantastic opportunity," said Richards.
"One of the biggest problems in ocean sailing is that it is really tough for young sailors to find enough funding.
"I was lucky enough to be given my big break by Tracy Edwards, which then gave me the opportunity to meet Pindar, who have now sponsored me for over four years.
"Without this, I would not be where I am today and I am thrilled that someone else will have the same chance through this amazing competition."
The entries will be shortlisted to 30 people, who will be interviewed by a panel of judges.
Ten finalists will then get to sail with Richards on board Pindar's Open 60, after which the lucky winner will be chosen.
Richards became the first British woman to sail around the world single-handed in the Around Alone race in 2003. And she became an MBE in the New Year Honours.
