The 10-times world champion, beaten by John Part in last year's final, never had to move out of third gear against the Northern Ireland qualifier.

Taylor won the first two sets without dropping a leg before McGarry got off the mark at the start of the third.

McGarry won another leg in the fourth set but Taylor hardly broke sweat as he booked his place in the last 16.

Simon Whatley held his nerve in sudden death to defeat former world champion Richie Burnett 4-3 in another third-round match at the Circus Tavern in Purfleet.

Beaton, who won the Embassy title in 1996, will now meet Mark Dudbridge, who beat defending champion Jon Part.

Colin Lloyd fired a warning to his rivals for the title by demolishing Peter Evison 4-1.

Lloyd missed the chance of a nine-dart finish in the third leg of the fifth set when he failed to find treble 19 after nailing seven treble 20s.

But he kept his composure to secure a 4-1 win.

"I went up another gear after losing the first set and I'm very happy with that," said Lloyd.

He now plays Wayne Mardle, who struggled past Steve Maish 4-2.

"It was a tough match and I made it tougher for myself," said Mardle, the number 12 seed.
