French pair Jean-Pierre Dick and Nicolas Abiven won the trans-Atlantic Transat Jaques Vabre race in their boat Virbac.

But there was some success for British sailors behind them in the monohull class, with Alex Thomson taking second place with Roland Jourdain on Sill.

Mike Golding celebrated a successful debut for his new Ecover boat in third.

But there was disappointment in the Open 60 multihull class for Ellen MacArthur, who had yet to finish the 4,300-mile race on Wednesday evening after becoming becalmed en route on her giant trimaran Foncia with co-skipper Alain Gautier.

The winning boat crossed the line in Brazil in a time of 16 days, 15 hours and 18 minutes since leaving Le Havre in France.

Another British entry, Team Cowes - crewed by Nick Moloney and Sam Davies - finished the gruelling race in sixth place in 17 days, 19 hours and 57 minutes.
