Redgrave is keen to help young athletes fulfill their potential |
Olympic rowing legend Sir Steve Redgrave is to become a mentor to six leading British athletes in the build-up to the 2004 Games in Athens. Redgrave - who won gold medals at five consecutive Games - will offer advice, support and tips to the athletes.
400m runner Daniel Caines, triathlete Leandra Cave, cyclist Nicole Cooke, yachtsman Paul Goodison, hockey player Richard Mantell and Paralympic basketballer Jon Pollock will all benefit from Redgrave's experience.
"It is something I have always wanted to do," said Redgrave, speaking at the launch of Team Visa.
"It is about maximising ideas and widening horizons and it is something that was not available to me when I was first starting up." Caines has high hopes for the new system.
"If, for example, it is the night before an Olympic final and someone wants to know how to deal with the pressure then we will be able to call Steve and use his experience to our advantage," he said.
