Walker has been in the job for nine years |
Sir Rodney Walker will step down as chairman of UK Sport when his current term expires in September. There had been speculation that Walker would be offered an extension, but Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell said a successor would be appointed in September.
Walker has been chairman since 1998 after being appointed chairman of the GB Sports Council in 1994 and Sport England a year later.
"I have done nine years altogether and it comes to an end in September," he said.
"I am aware the Government were talking about extending it but when you realise the average term of my predecessors was six years I think I have had a good run."
Walker has also been chairman of the Rugby Football League, Leicester City plc and Wembley National Stadium Limited.
UK Sport is the body which oversees drug-testing in sport, funding for elite athletes and the organisation of major sporting events.
