The 2008 Beijing Olympics will be held two weeks later than planned because of concerns about heat and humidity in the Chinese capital. The Summer Games were scheduled to be held from 25 July to 10 August.
But the International Olympic Committee's executive board has agreed to Beijing's request to move the dates to 8 to 24 August.
The change is intended to increase the chance of good weather conditions, with less heat and humidity and a decreased risk for thunderstorms, IOC sports director Gilbert Felli said.
Beijing had asked for the dates to be changed to avoid the peak of its summer, when temperatures typically reach 38C.
