Funnell made it back-to-back titles |
Reigning champion Pippa Funnell, aboard Supreme Rock, won the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials for a second successive year. Funnell, who lead after the dressage and the cross-country stages, won by just 0.4 points from Finland's Piia Pantsu on Ypaja Karuso after the show jumping.
Great Britain's Jeanette Brakewell on Over To You was third.
Funnell had one fence down and had six time penalties to keep the crowd on edge.
She became only the third rider to claim successive Badminton wins.
Captain Mark Phillips won aboard Great Ovation in 1971 & 1972 , while Ian Stark and Sir Wattie won in 1986 & 1988 when the 1987 event was cancelled.
Pantsu, making her debut at Badminton, jumped a clear round, while Brakewell also went clear.
Funnell, whose second mount Cornerman started in the showjumping in third but slipped to sixth after picking up eight faults, will now seek to defend her European Championship title to be held in Punchestown 18 -22 September.
"Rocky is such a good jumper in that gear and although I knew I was slow I was worried that if I kicked on the fences would start to fall - but it is something I have to work on.
"However it made the show jumping more exciting - but I owe it all to Rocky," Funnell said.
