| Qualifier stuns Manley ![]() Whitlock produced the shock of the championships World number six Peter "one dart" Manley has been knocked out of the World Championships by wild-card qualifier Simon Whitlock. Manley had been expected to make light work of his second-round opponent but succumbed to a 4-1 defeat at the hands of a player known as "the wizard". The 34-year-old Whitlock got off to a solid start, winning the first set in the deciding rubber. His cause was further helped in the second set by superb accuracy on the doubles which saw him take a 2-0 lead. From there, Manley rarely challenged. Afterwards a shellshocked Whitlock said: "I'm over the moon, I couldn't be any happier.
"That was a big highlight in my career. The last four months I've won four big tournaments in Australia and just being here is absolutely fantastic. I never ever thought I'd be here." Whitlock warned his rivals in the last 16 that he still had more to offer for the rest of the competition. He added: "I can play better than that. I think I can go all the way to the final." He was joined in the third round by Chris Mason following his impressive 4-2 victory against Andy Jenkins. Mason won the first set with ease but struggled in the next two as Jenkins fought his way to a narrow 2-1 lead. The 34-year-old Bristolian, though, was not finished and bounced back in the fourth set with straight legs. "Mase the ace" checked out on 106 in the first leg of set five, with accuracy that matched the remainder of the set. He rounded off the sixth set in confident fashion, winning with a stunning 121 outshot. Richie Burnett was made to work a little hard for his place in the next round, after a 4-3 victory over Keith Deller in a battle between two former world champions. Burnett had pulled out a 3-1 lead and looked on course for an early win before Deller fought back, dramatically keeping the contest alive in the fifth rubber of the sixth set. In Monday's other remaining fixtures, there were wins for Colin Lloyd, Ronnie Baxter and Kevin Painter. | See also: 29 Dec 02 | Other Sports 28 Dec 02 | Other Sports 27 Dec 02 | Other Sports 27 Dec 02 | Other Sports 14 Jan 03 | World Darts Championship 2002 Top Other Sports stories now: Links to more Other Sports stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
