| Phelps shatters world record ![]() The two-year-old record was smashed by Phelps Michael Phelps edged out Erik Vendt to set a new world record for the 400m individual medley at the US national swimming championships. Phelps finished in a time of four minutes 11.09 seconds to break American Tom Dolan's former world mark of 4:11.76. Vendt also beat the previous record with his time of 4:11.27, completing an awesome display from the two fierce rivals.
"I knew whoever touched the wall first would break the record. I love racing against him." Phelps started well and was over three seconds ahead after the butterfly and backstroke legs. But Vendt came back strongly on the breaststroke leg and was only beaten in the final stretch for the wall. "I knew whoever won would have the world record, and I came in tonight focusing on winning," Vendt told USA Swimming. "To be honest, I thought I had him going into the last 25, but he's just really tough. "It was the best race I've ever been a part of. "I guarantee if I didn't have him right there, there's no way I would have done that." | Top Other Sports stories now: Links to more Other Sports stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
