'The Power's' emphatic victory set up a last-four clash with Dave Askew. Taylor outgunned the Canadian to take the opening three sets, and although Part offered some resistance in the third, he was powerless to stop Taylor, who finished off the match with double top for an average of just over 100. Earlier in the evening Peter Manley recorded an impressive 6-2 quarter-final win over Ronnie Baxter to book his place in the semi-finals against Colin Lloyd. The large crowd were expecting fireworks from two of the game's fastest players - and they were not disappointed.
The match started at a furious pace, and Baxter clinched two of the three opening sets. But Manley recovered and proved his class with a 123 checkout to win the fifth and move ahead for the first time in the match, and went on to win the next three sets. Like Phil Taylor, Colin Lloyd looked on his way to a whitewash when he led Richie Burnett 5-0, before the Welshman rallied to win the next four sets. But the man known as 'Jaws' held his nerve to take the 10th set with a 121 finish. "I said after the Alan Warriner game that anything else is a bonus and I'm just delighted with the win," said Lloyd. "I went 5-0 up but it could have been closer than that. "However, Richie missed the doubles today and I didn't - that's what it all about." Despite his impressive win, Lloyd believes he can still improve. He added: "I'm a little bit disappointed with the way I played today because I don't believe I was that consistent." 'Diamond' Dave Askew booked his place in the semi-finals with a 6-2 win over Dennis Priestley.
The match was a closely fought encounter until Askew edged the fifth set to move 3-2 ahead. Askew took a crucial two set lead when a 92 checkout gave him a 3-0 whitewash in the sixth set and though Priestley fought back, he could not prevent Askew taking the win. "I'm very pleased with the win," said Askew. "I watched Dennis against Rod Harrington last night and both players didn't play that well. "The pair of them played that badly I thought it would have been a walk in the park - but in the first set I soon realised it wasn't going to be easy. "Dennis put me under a lot of pressure so it was pleasing that at 2-2 I was able to move up a gear and build a 5-2 lead." |
