Awesome Taylor powers into quarters
Phil Taylor
'The Power' gave the crowd a scintillating display
Phil Taylor looked well on course to defend his Skol World Championship as he blitzed Shayne Burgess 6-1 to reach the quarter-finals.

Taylor, the nine times champion, finished with an incredible three dart average of 111.21 and will now meet John Part, who crushed Steve Beaton 6-0.

Taylor's awesome performance put paid to suggestions that his power was on the wane, after some indifferent performances of late.

The 41-year-old, nicknamed 'The Power', made a blistering start and produced a clinical 140 check-out - a 12-dart finish - to win the opening leg.

He then reeled off the next five legs to race into a two-set lead and leave Burgess shell-shocked.

Burgess could not find a way into the match

Burgess, who has been struggling for form, simply could not get a foothold in the game as Taylor sealed the next two sets, both 3-0.

A 10 dart finish gave Taylor the fifth set and victory looked a formality.

However, with the finishing line in sight, Taylor's form dipped and Burgess took full advantage to register his name on the scoresheet.

But it was business as usual in the sixth set as Taylor recovered to wrap up victory with a shot at double four.

Part refuses to be overawed by his next opponent, however.

The 35-year-old is feeling confident after producing a devastating display of his own to whitewash Beaton 6-0 at the Circus Tavern.

"I told everyone around me that I was feeling good and all the practice and work is paying off," said Part.

John Part will meet Phil Taylor in the quarter-finals
Part: Missed out on nine-dart finish

"My win over Steve sent out a warning to Phil. I watched his performance earlier today and it was his best ever, so I guess I sent out a message that I'm ready to play him.

"I hope people are surprised because I don't think I will stop playing this well."

Part, who suffered a 7-0 defeat to Taylor in last year's final, was on course for a nine-dart finish in the third set.

He hit two successive maximums, but his seventh dart landed the wrong side of the treble 20 wire.

Beaton was already well beaten by this stage, however, and could do nothing to halt Part's progress.

Dave Askew is also through to the last eight after a 6-3 win over Roland Scholten.

"I knew I would have to battle hard in this tournament. I did it against Chris Mason (first round) and again today," said Askew.

Scholten led 2-1 in the early stages but Redhill-based Askew took control from thereon in.

The Surrey thrower will now face either Rod Harrington or Dennis Priestley.
