Harrington, who celebrated his 44th birthday at Purfleet on Sunday, held his composure to stage several comebacks after Deller had threatened to take the match. The match took a controversial turn in the fifth set when the pair exchanged words with the scores levels at 2-2. Deller, world champion back in 1983, held his nerve to take the tense set thanks to a double 16.
And the third seed finally clinched the seventh set and the match, nailing a double 10 to the delight of his fans in the crowd. After the match, Harrington revealed there was no real confrontation between himself and Deller. "What happened was that when Keith was releasing his third dart, he was flicking his left leg out. "I'm a little bit of an on the edge player where I want to get to the oche quickly. "I'm moving onto the back of him just a little bit quick and he caught me on the shin three times. "I've known Keith for years and there was actually no niggle. I would never use gamesmanship because I don't think I have to." Part through In the evening's other match, Dennis Priestley booked his place in the second round after a 4-1 victory over 20-year-old qualifier Matt Chapman. Earlier, Roland Scholten saw off crowd favourite "Big" Cliff Lazarenko 4-1. The "Flying Dutchman" took a 3-0 lead after the first three sets, with Lazarenko pulling one back in the fourth. But Scholten took the match in the fifth set - although he acknowledged it was not one of his best performances. Former finalist John Part also advanced into the next round after a 4-2 victory over Mick Manning. |
