The San Diego Padres leadoff hitter became only the 25th player to surpass the 3000-hit mark when he lofted a pitch from John Thomson into right field. Henderson, who became baseball's leading all-time run-scorer three days earlier, breaking Ty Cobb's 73-year-old record, was mobbed by his fellow team-mates. The hit took the 42-year-old level with Roberto Clemente on the all-time list. In April, Henderson broke Babe Ruth's career walks record with number 2063. He has now extended that record to 2141. The game, which the Padres lost 14-5, was also Tony Gywnn's last before retiring after 20 successful seasons. Gywnn, who like Baltimore's Cal Ripken, has spent his entire career with one club, ended his illustrious career with 3140 hits. He is 16th on the all-time list, two behind Robin Yount. |
