Third baseman Cal Ripken had to settle for a hitless farewell on Saturday as his team, the Baltimore Orioles lost 5-1 to the Boston Red Sox.

Ripken closed out his Hall of Fame career in a 2-for-48 skid as the Red Sox completed a four-game sweep of the Orioles.

A sell-out crowd of 48,807, including former President Bill Clinton and Major League commissioner Bud Selig, attended Ripken's 3,001st and final game.

Elsewhere, Jermaine Dye hit a three-run homer as the Oakland Athletics beat the Anaheim Angels 6-3 for their 28th victory in 32 games.

In St Petersburg, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays staved off their 100th defeat of the year for at least another day by beating the New York Yankees 5-2.

Detroit Tigers (66-95) gained a doubleheader split that ensured the Kansas City Royals (64-97) will finish last in the AL Central.

The Royals won the first game 8-3, but lost the second 2-1.

In Canada, the Toronto Blue Jays handed the Cleveland Indians their fourth consecutive loss with a 5-2 victory.

In Minneapolis, David Ortiz and AJ Pierzynski hit home runs to lead the Minnesota Twins past the Chicago White Sox 6-5 and assure them of at least a tie for second place.

The Seattle Mariners tied the Major League record for wins with their 116th, beating the Texas Rangers 1-0 behind Bret Boone's first-inning homer.
