Ripken closed out his Hall of Fame career in a 2-for-48 skid as the Red Sox completed a four-game sweep of the Orioles. A sell-out crowd of 48,807, including former President Bill Clinton and Major League commissioner Bud Selig, attended Ripken's 3,001st and final game. Elsewhere, Jermaine Dye hit a three-run homer as the Oakland Athletics beat the Anaheim Angels 6-3 for their 28th victory in 32 games. In St Petersburg, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays staved off their 100th defeat of the year for at least another day by beating the New York Yankees 5-2. Detroit Tigers (66-95) gained a doubleheader split that ensured the Kansas City Royals (64-97) will finish last in the AL Central. The Royals won the first game 8-3, but lost the second 2-1. In Canada, the Toronto Blue Jays handed the Cleveland Indians their fourth consecutive loss with a 5-2 victory. In Minneapolis, David Ortiz and AJ Pierzynski hit home runs to lead the Minnesota Twins past the Chicago White Sox 6-5 and assure them of at least a tie for second place. The Seattle Mariners tied the Major League record for wins with their 116th, beating the Texas Rangers 1-0 behind Bret Boone's first-inning homer. National League

Bonds, who hit his record 71st and 72nd homers on Friday night, singled as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning. He then left for a pinch-runner, prompting many fans to leave. Rickey Henderson pulled within one hit of 3,000 with one day left in the season, and Phil Nevin had his first three-homer game, including a grand slam, as the San Diego Padres beat the Colorado Rockies 10-4. Julian Tavarez took a no-hitter into the eighth inning, Sammy Sosa hit his 63rd homer and Roosevelt Brown had seven RBIs to lead the Chicago Cubs 13-2 over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
