Bonds creates baseball history

Bonds equalled McGwire's record on Thursday
Barry Bonds became baseball's record single-season home run scorer when he struck his 71st and 72nd homers of the season.

The San Francisco Giants slugger equalled Mark McGwire's three-year record on Thursday when he hit his 70th home run of the season against the Houston Astros.

But he finally surpassed McGwire's mark when he hit Los Angeles Dodgers' Chan Ho Park to right-centre field in the first inning of a match on Friday.

It's a crazy number and we all thought it was crazy at the end of 1998

His homer sparked scenes of jubilation at Pacific Bell Park.

As he passed home plate, the 37-year-old was engulfed by his family and fellow team-mates as fireworks were let off around the stadium.

And he followed his 71st homer with his 72nd in the third inning.

Bonds had previously hit his 500th career home run against the Dodgers earlier in the season.

The record-breaking hit moved him to 565 on the all-time list, just eight behind Harmon Killebrew in sixth place.

McGwire had set his record in 1998 playing for the St Louis Cardinals.

"It's a crazy number and we all thought it was crazy at the end of 1998," said McGwire.

"But now we're looking at it like it's not crazy. That's just the way the game's gone."
